The IMO (International Maritime Orginisation) that created the SOLAS Convention (safety of lives at sea) introduced new regulations in January 2015 that come into effect 1st July 2016. The rules in essence require that all container weights supplied to shipping companies are able to be verified to reduce the risk of container ship accidents due to inaccurate weight distribution.
The two methods of ensuring compliance are to either
- weigh the entire container loaded or
- weigh the goods individually on smaller scales and accumulate those weights to extract the container weight.
To ensure that those weights obtained are indeed accurate the requirement dictates that the scales used to obtain those weights are trade approved instruments that are verified legal for trade use. In most instances those scales will be pallet scales that accept a standard pallet and be capable of giving gross weights to the operator.
